Salem Weather

You are coming to New England and you have heard the meteorologist say that there will be
rain, thunder, lightning with dogs and cats falling from the sky and all that other fire and
brimstone stuff.
Well, that may not be actually true.

The weather in New England is a constant work in progress. It can be sunny one minute, rainy
the next and maybe snow later (hopefully not in July). As Mark Twain famously said, “If you don’t like the weather in New England, wait five minutes.”
The weather in New England is unique and we have also noted some interesting phenomena.

Weather predicted for Boston does not necessarily happen exactly the same here. If you are
coming to Salem, remember that the Boston forecast is for Boston and not Salem. We have noticed that rain predicted for the region doesn’t necessarily happen here. Why?
Well, some say it is the witches protecting us. They say that until we get a two-foot snowstorm
and then it is said the witches are cursing us.

All of us have noticed that Salem has its own micro weather pattern. The ocean is to our east
and the highway surrounds us to the north. The highway creates a heat barrier due to sun
radiating off of the road and the heat generated from the vehicles. Weak storms tend to follow
the highway and go north of us to the ocean. While Boston may be experiencing downpours,
we might be just cloudy with a few scattered sprinkles. If you are coming to our lovely city, don’t be afraid of the weather forecast. It may not be as
bad as you think. Maybe bring a few extra items just to be safe. But if you forget, you can buy
inexpensive umbrellas and ponchos in Salem.
Nobody believes that Mr. Twain ever came to Salem, but we do believe that if he came here,
he would have had some compelling words about our local weather.
